Mounting PV modules in portrait or landscape on tile roofs
On tile roofs, solar modules are usually mounted vertically because of the lower material costs. In addition, most module manufacturers also recommend vertical mounting, as this is the best way to ensure the functionality of the module.
With the novotegra top-fix clamp system, modules can be quickly and easily installed in portrait orientation. Our insertion systems also allow for lengthwise installation, although the insertion rail must be realised with a cross rail connection in either case.
If local conditions such as roof windows, chimneys and dormers require a more flexible arrangement, module mounting in landscape can be considered. With all novotegra insertion systems, modules can also be mounted in landscape. With the clamp systems, this has to be solved using a cross layer.
Mounting PV modules in portrait or landscape on flat roofs
On flat roofs, solar modules have been installed almost exclusively in landscape for decades. Due to better aerodynamics and a flatter construction, less ballast is required for modules in portrait orientation. This option also offers advantages in terms of shading and the use of materials.
Therefore, the modules are installed horizontally with all novotegra flat roof systems.
In recent years, however, vertical mounting on flat roofs has increased. This way, more modules can be attached per row. However, care must be taken to ensure that the row spacing is sufficient, otherwise the modules will be too heavily shaded.
Therefore, the size of the roof area to be used and the position of the sun must be taken into account when making the decision.
Mounting PV modules in portrait or landscape on green roofs
When installing PV systems on green roofs, we clearly favour vertical mounting for three reasons: there is sufficient space under the modules for planting and maintenance work, and more modules can be installed per row.
Since green roofs fulfil other functions, such as maintaining biodiversity or cooling, it is not recommended to cover the entire surface with PV modules. Therefore, a small, efficiently used area is important.
Mounting PV modules in portrait or landscape on facades
On facades, we generally recommend installing the modules landscape using our insertion systems, as this minimises the surface area exposed to wind and, above all, prevents annoying rattling noises in windy areas.
Visually, it can be advantageous to arrange the modules portrait on house facades with many floor-to-ceiling windows. However, wind load must always be taken into account when making this choice.
Planning in Solar-Planit
When planning the PV system in Solar-Planit, you can select constructions for portrait or landscape mounting in the ‘Mounting system’ tab. It is always worth trying out both options to achieve the best possible design.
